Starting in late September 2011, Cordley PTA’s popular after school clubs will return! The year-long Language Club will run on Wednesdays from 3:45 to 5:00 and the semester-long Nature Club will run on Tuesdays from 3:45 to 5:00. (Because of size limitations on Nature Club, it will run for two semester-length sessions to allow twice as many students to take advantage of this great opportunity!)
¡ Hola! Privyet! Ni hao! Hello! Welcome to Language Club! Did you know that learning another language promotes intellectual growth and cognitive flexibility, increases a person’s understanding of his/her native language, and opens the door to other cultures? Our Language Club will give students an introduction to three important world languages – Spanish, Russian and Mandarin Chinese. Through stories, crafts, songs, and games, students will learn introductory lessons in all three languages as well as geographical/cultural information. (The group will be split into three smaller groups by age and will rotate through each of the languages in 9 week sessions.) The teachers will include students and/or staff from the University of Kansas Centers for Latin American Studies, East Asian Studies, and Russian, Eastern European and Eurasian Studies, as well as volunteers from Lawrence High School’s National Honor Society. This year-long exploration of world cultures and languages will culminate in a special project/presentation for the Cordley World Fair in May. Language Club will meet on Wednesday afternoons from 3:45 to 5:00 on the following dates: September 28, October 5, 12, 19, 26, November 2, 9, 16, 30, December 7, 14, January 18, 25, February 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, March 7, 14, 28, 4, 11, 18, 25, May 2, 9. Club Cost: 27 sessions @ $4 each plus $7 for materials fee = $115 total fee.
Environmental education boosts students’ critical thinking skills and also encourages more responsible stewardship of the planet. Join the Prairie Park Nature Center staff in this exploration of our natural world. Nature Club’s environmental programs will include live animal presentations, outdoor and indoor investigations, games, crafts, and other activities appropriate to the topic of the week. Sample topics include: Web of Life, Great Snakes, Nature’s Recyclers, Great Migrations, Adaptations for Survival, etc. Nature Club will meet on Tuesday afternoons from 3:45 to 5:00. This Fall Semester session will meet on the following dates: September 27, October 4, 11, 18, 25, November 1, 8, 15, 29, December 6, 13. Specific dates and enrollment forms for the Spring Semester session will be available in December with the sessions starting in January. Club Cost: 11 sessions @ $4 each plus $6 materials fee = $ 50 total fee.
